Equine Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Resources
Available on AAEP Web Site

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) reminds horse owners and
veterinarians that when an emergency or natural disaster strikes, it is in the best interest of the
horse for everyone to be prepared. With this in mind, the AAEP has updated its online equine
emergency and disaster preparedness resources in time for the start of the Atlantic hurricane
season. To access these materials, visit http://www.aaep.org/emergency_prep.htm. Items
available include the AAEP’s “Hurricane Equine Evacuation” informational plan, which
provides resources for those living in coastal states, as well as the association’s popular
“Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Guidelines.”

“As we’ve learned from recent disasters, preparedness can mean the difference between life and
death for humans and horses alike, ” said James Hamilton, DVM, chairman of the AAEP
Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Committee. “Housing for animals, food and water
supplies, and evacuation transportation options are just a few of the key decisions that should be
made before an emergency occurs.”

The Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Committee is dedicated to the development of
beneficial resources for veterinarians and horse owners. While its work is ongoing, the
Committee invites others to support its efforts by providing updated information regarding state
and national animal emergency management information. For more information about the
AAEP’s emergency and disaster preparedness efforts, Web site or printed materials, please
contact Keith Kleine, director of industry relations, at 859-233-0147 or kkleine@aaep.org.

A special opportunity for youth members:
2007 National Youth Horse Leader’s Symposium
The 30th Annual National Youth Horse Leaders Symposium, presented by the American Youth
Horse Council (AYHC), will be held on March 9 - 11, 2007 in conjunction with the Rocky
Mountain Horse Expo in Denver, Colorado. The 2007 event will boast more than two-dozen
internationally and nationally respected presenters assembled to share their keys to successful
youth horse programming and horse management. Attendees will find resources, referrals, and
networking to improve their ability to help kids connect through horses. A weekend program for
teen leaders is always a favorite bringing youth participating in many different horse disciplines
and breed activities together to learn leadership skills and effective horsemanship techniques.

AYHC President Christy Landwehr says, "This event is open to all youth leaders, youth and
horse industry at-large members. It is a great way to network and share ideas about how to work
creatively with kids and horses, I hope to see you there." The symposium routinely draws a
broad representation of youth horse leaders from breed associations, equine sport organizations,
Cooperative Extension, universities, and the crucially important hands-on youth leaders from
such groups as 4-H, U.S. Pony Club, National High School Rodeo, Future Farmers of America,
Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and more.
